Abstract

Anhydrous glasses of jadeite + NaF and jadeite + cryolite compositions were quenched from melts at 1250 degrees C and 3.0- 3.5 kbar. The presence of (super [4]) Al, (super [5]) Al, and (super [6]) Al was demonstrated in both glasses. The (super [5]) Al is thought to be present in AlF (super 2-) (sub 5) complexes, a previously unknown species.
