Abstract

The crystal structures of sugilite, Na (sub 2) K(Fe (super 3+) ,Mn (super 3+) ,Al) (sub 2) Li (sub 3) Si (sub 12) O (sub 30) , a 10.009(2), c 14.006(3) Angstrom, from the Wessels mine, Kalahari (South Africa), and brannockite, KSn (sub 2) Li (sub 3) Si (sub 12) O (sub 30) , a 10.002(2), c 14.263(3) Angstrom from the Foote mine, Kings Mountain (North Carolina, U.S.A.), were refined from X-ray single-crystal data. Both minerals crystallize in the space group P6/mcc and belong to the double-ring silicates. Literature data are used to develop some general rules concerning the structural and chemical variation within this structure type.
