Abstract

The distribution of 55 elements in 14 selected seams of medium-volatile bituminous to semi-anthracite coals of the Kootenay group in a 875 m section at Mt Allan, Alberta, was studied by INAA. Two populations in terms of element distribution appear to be present, divided roughly along rank boundaries. All the medium-volatile and most of the low-volatile bituminous coals contain more Cr, Hf, K, Rb, Sc, Th, V and Yb than the higher rank ones lower in the section, which generally contain more Fe and Mn. Though the differences appear to be rank-related, they may also be due to changes in depositional environments in the original peat swamps. The Na/K ratio, used as an indicator of burial rate, suggests three cycles in the Mt Allan section. The study suggests that organic or inorganic affinities of elements in the coals may be determined using their concentrations versus ash content. Br and Sb are the only elements enriched in the Mt Allan coals, whereas Fe, Mg, Mn, Na, K, Co and Ta are depleted in most seams, if the data are evaluated on a whole-coal basis.
