Abstract

Large areas of the southern Antarctic Peninsula are underlain by granitic rocks of the Lassiter Coast intrusive suite. K/Ar and Rb/Sr isotopic ages are in the range 130-95 m.y., early Cretaceous. These are I-type granitic rocks that have both typical calc-alkaline geochemical trends, including REE behaviour, and a compositional range similar to the high-Al, calc-alkaline basalt-andesite- rhyolite suite characteristic of continental margins. Exposures of these rocks define a linear batholithic complex whose form and regional extent can be traced northward into the N Antarctic Peninsula and southernmost S America. Granitic rocks of this area represent magma formed in a magmatic arc that developed in response to subduction of the Pacific Ocean plate along the W margin of the southern Antarctic Peninsula. Geochemical features lead to the conclusion that batholithic rocks of the entire Antarctic Peninsula represent a consanguineous suite whose origin is due to subduction.
