Abstract
A variety of pyrolysis systems are described for use in source-rock evaluation. Pyrolysis coupled with a flame-ionization detector is the simplest and least expensive technique. Non-indigenous hydrocarbons can be detected by the same technique but GC or MS may be required to identify and differentiate migrated hydrocarbons or refined petroleum products. For detailed geochemical analysis, pyrolysis-GC is the most versatile technique.
