Abstract
During study of Argentinian soil clays, XRD traces were obtained which had no basal reflections, but showed the prism reflection (02,11) corresponding with a spacing of approx 4.47 A. Such reflections are known to be at larger spacings for chlorite and vermiculite than for clays of the kaolin, mica and smectite groups. This note considers pre-treatment that assists the identification of clay groups when this is the only clear spacing present.
