Abstract
Beneath the surface of the earth, geophysicists can now locate with ever-increasing precision oil and ores, various layers of rock, seams of continents, and magma. What they cannot locate within the earth (and who can be sure they've ever tried) is something that Christian metaphysicians were for centuries certain was there: hell (and a few are still certain).
