Abstract

Minute (average diameter 10 mu m) optically and compositionally zoned crystals of Cu-bearing Ni-Co-Fe disulphides with a pyrite-type structure have been recognized in galena from a minor occurrence of Pb-Cu mineralization in Permian travertine from Karniowice, Poland. One grain of cuprian siegenite, 150 X 30 mu m, has also been observed in the galena. Electron-microprobe analyses of the zoned disulphide are reported and indicate compositional variations from cuprian pyrite with 2.9 wt.% Cu through cuprian bravoite to villamaninite, Cu (sub 0.36) Ni (sub 0.46) Co (sub 0.14) Fe (sub 0.04) S (sub 2) . Analysis of the cuprian siegenite, which probably formed by transformation of the disulphides, indicates a composition of Cu (sub 0.31) Ni (sub 1.46) Co (sub 1.18) Fe (sub 0.05) S (sub 4) .
