Study by infrared spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction of water-cation-sheet interactions in the phases with 14.6, 12.2 and 10.1 Aa of a synthetic lithium-saponite

Data obtained from XRD and IR enabled the nature of the interactions between water, interlayer cations, and layers in the 14.6, 12.2, and 10.1 A phases of a synthetic Li-saponite to be determined. XRD provided information on the interlayer space accessible to water and interlayer cations, while perturbations to the stretching vibration frequencies of the structural hydroxyls observed by IR indicated the nature and position of the atoms located in the hexagonal cavities. This study confirms the presence of hydrated cations (Li-H (sub 2) O) (super +) in the ditrigonal cavities of the layers of Li-saponite, in a hydration state corresponding with the phase at 10.1 A.
