Abstract

Hogbomite from central Australia is hexagonal P6 (sub 3) mc, with a 5.734, c 18.389 A. Structural and microprobe analyses indicate the formula 356Al (sub 14.61) Fe (super 2+) (sub 2.84) Fe (super 3+) (sub 1.44) Mg (sub 1.40) TiZn (sub 0.6) (Ga,Mn,Na) (sub 0.11) O (sub 30) (OH) (sub 2) . The 8-layer sequence (ABCABACB) has the cations ordered into 6 tetrahedral and 16 octahedral sites per unit cell. The structure is essentially a 1:1 intergrowth of spinel-like structure and nolanite-like structure.
