Occurrence of manganese-rich microparticles in the eastern basin of Lake Erie
The Canadian Mineralogist (August 1981) 19, Part 3: 435-440

Abstract

One of four sampling stations yielded abundant Mn-rich ring-shaped particles <3 mu m in diameter. Small quantities of Si, K, Ca, S, Cu and Zn were also detected in the particles. One star-shaped Mn-bearing particle, approx 2 mu m in diameter, was found. The morphology is similar to that of the microorganism Metallogenium personatum which plays an important role in the formation of freshwater Mn deposits and may further serve as adsorption sites for heavy metals.
