Abstract
Tamarugite, ideally NaAl(SO (sub 4) ) (sub 2) .6H (sub 2) O, forms incrustations in cavities in altered basanitic pyroclastic rocks. Small euhedral, tabular (010) lamellar crystals form white porous aggregates. Chemical analysis on an impure sample gave Al (sub 2) O (sub 3) 13.30, MgO 0.79, CaO 0.17, Na (sub 2) O 8.44, K (sub 2) O 0.19, SO (sub 3) 43.81, Cl 1.75, Rb tr., Mn tr., Zn tr., Cu tr., Pb tr., H (sub 2) O 31.20, insol. res. 0.72, = 100.37. Optical data are alpha 1.4842, beta 1.4869, gamma 1.4964, 2V (sub gamma ) 57-60 degrees , alpha :c 3 degrees . SEM photographs are included, as are some DTA and TG data.
