Abstract
New geological and geochronological data clearly establish that the two Archaean basement rock terrains recognized previously in Minnesota also occur in N Wisconsin and Michigan, on the E side of the midcontinent gravity high. Greenstone-granite complexes (about 2700 m.y. old) that are remarkably similar to those in the greenstone terrain of N Minnesota are present on the S side of the Gogebic Range in N Wisconsin and adjacent Michigan and in the N complex of the Marquette district. Migmatitic gneisses and amphibolite, which are similar to the high-grade rocks in the gneiss terrain in S Minnesota, are sporadically exposed S of the greenstone terrain and appear to compose the basement in most of N and central Wisconsin and N Michigan.
