Abstract

The Louisiana Gulf Coast includes the 38 southern parishes of Louisiana and the 16 continental-shelf areas offshore. Oil and gas are produced from strata ranging in age from Cretaceous to Pleistocene. There were 2,887 development and exploratory wells drilled in 1965, 475 more than in 1964. Of the 654 exploratory wells, 19% were successful. Of the 28 new-field discoveries (12 onshore and 16 offshore), the most important finds are: Block 218 field, Vermilion Area; Block 19 and Block 280 fields, West Cameron Area; Cypress Island field, St. Martin Parish; and Hell Hole Bayou field, Vermilion Parish. The most significant of the 124 new pools and extensions were completed in Creole field, West Cameron Area; Block 8 field, South Marsh Island Area; Weeks Island field, Iberia Parish; Bayou Bouillon field, Iberville Parish; and Jeanerette field, St. Mary Parish. Geophysical activity increased notably in both onshore and offshore areas. The year 1965 compared favorably with 1964, and overall drilling activity and geophysical exploration actually increased.
