The Encyclopedic Dictionary of Exploration Geophysics (Sheriff, 2002) and the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Applied Geophysics (Sheriff, 2006) define a physical field as “That space in which an effect, e.g., gravity, electric, or magnetic, is measurable.” These definitions mean that a physical or geophysical field is a space, which differs significantly from another definition of the theory of fields in the literature.
