Before ending his term as the SEG Editor, Kees Wapenaar noted that some interesting studies in applied geophysics are carried out by students who write their theses and earn their degrees but never publish the results elsewhere. He suggested that publishing abstracts of recently defended Ph.D. dissertations in Geophysics might be a valuable service to the SEG members. Both GEOPHYSICS editors and staff enthusiastically supported Kees’ idea. As a result, you see the first section of Dissertation Abstracts in GEOPHYSICS. The hope is that this section, which will now appear regularly, could introduce GEOPHYSICS readers to research that otherwise might go unnoticed and perhaps even prompt someone to contact authors of the abstracts or read the dissertations when links are provided.
