In March of 1994, a celebration/symposium, SvenFest, was held at the Colorado School of Mines to honor Sven Treitel. Attending the three-day celebration were more than 200 friends from the exploration industry and academia. The topics by the 21 invited speakers, all friends and colleagues of Sven's, covered a significant cross-section of current research in contemporary seismic exploration, solid earth science, and applied mathematics. Such breadth was a fitting tribute to Sven, whose interests have never been subject to narrow categorization. Indicative of the cross-disciplinary nature of the symposium, some of the papers presented will be published in this issue of Geophysics and some were published in the February 1996 issue of Geophysical Journal International. In addition to the three papers from SvenFest published in this issue, two others have already been published in GEOPHYSlCS.
