Recording on the surface with a source in wells near Friendswood, Texas and Sego Canyon, Utah, Chen et al. found that log-log plots of the amplitude of the direct arrival against distance yielded straight lines with slopes of -2.14. A 1958 paper by the Ralph Lynn and me (Levin and Lynn, 1958) included log-log plots of first arrival amplitudes against traveltimes for eight wells, mostly wells in western United States. We obtained straight lines with average slopes of -2.38 and -2.26. By present standards, our wells were shallow and velocities did not vary greatly within a well. In view of the limited accuracy explosive, nonreproducible sources and paper records allowed, our result confirm those of Chen et al.
