Abstract

Measurements based on the amplitude of seismic events have been proposed as a means of determining bed thickness (Widess, 1973), composition of facies (Lindseth, 1979), contents of pores (Sherwood et al., 1983), and rock density (Carrion et al., 1983). In this note a systematic error in empirical amplitude measurements is described, its magnitude is estimated, and some of its implications are discussed.
