For no feathering, even when the reflector is a dipping plane, for a simple one-bed system the CMP time-distance equation is a hyperbola with its apex at a separation corresponding to coincident source and detector. When there is streamer feathering, the reflector is a dipping plane, and the usual CMP traces are gathered, the equation remains that for a hyperbola but in general for a hyperbola whose apex does not occur at zero source-to-detector separation.--Modified journal abstract.
