Over 200 years ago the French geodesist Bouguer (1749) published a formula about the relation of densities referring to a spherical earth and its crust. From that formula, free-air, Bouguer and elevation corrections can be derived. This procedure may be of some interest in geophysics and geodesy. Generally, textbooks have not considered this interesting perspective, and for this reason a brief analysis of the 1749 formula is presented here.
