The mathematical details of the theory of progressive seismic waves as presented in Cagniard's book (1962) are assumed to be reasonably well understood. A simplification can be achieved by a minor change of viewpoint. This alternative view is illustrated by a reconsideration of Cagniard's 8th chapter, “The Static Problem.” The mathematical tools apply as well to the other chapters but are not of vital interest for exploration problems, so the problem of further development is left to able readers.
