Abstract

This note describes a new seismic source developed for offshore exploration. The source develops an impulse output and has the desirable feature of eliminating the secondary bubble, or oscillation, pulses characteristic of impulsive sources, permitting improved resolution of geologic features in the subbottom. The output spectrum is normally contained entirely in the useful seismic band below 100 Hz, but can be tailored by the operating parameters to yield lower or higher cutoff frequencies if desired. Optimum spectrum generation, along with the conservation of the energy normally wasted in secondary oscillations, results in high source efficiency.
