Abstract

Rocks containing iron and titanium oxides can produce aeromagnetic anomalies that are positive, negative, or nonexistent depending on the magnitude and direction of the remanent component relative to the induced. A deposit in the Allard Lake region of Quebec, containing up to 20 percent oxide, produces no detectable anomaly and nd contains separate crystals of almost pure magnetite and exsolved hemoilmenite, the former magnetized normally and the latter inversely, in relative quantities such that their magnetic moments cancel. This shows that considerable care must be taken in magnetic interpretation when inversely magnetized minerals may be present.--D.B.V
