In a discussion of the Gulf pendulums in two recent textbooks (Heiskanen and Vening-Meinesz, 1958; Dobrin, 1960) it is stated that for a pendulum of the minimum type, the point of suspension is so located with respect to the center of mass that the period is least altered by any changes in dimensions resulting from thermal expansion.
