The titles in your scientific program confirm the validity of the name of your society. You are physicists interested in the composition and content of the earth's outer shell. Yours is one of the key professions on which the material welfare of the human race increasingly depends, and without which it could not long continue in its present state of well-being. My own career, like that of most of you, derives from my interest in physics and its applications. With keen awareness of this community of interest, I am happy indeed, and honored as well, to speak to you about physics and the organization which has been serving it so effectively for more than a quarter century.
