COVER: Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) high-resolution (1 m) bathymetry image from Kaikōura Canyon (1 km off the Kaikōura Peninsula, South Island, Aotearoa [New Zealand]), revealing the coexistence of geomorphic signatures of gravity flow processes, including bedrock erosion (erosive scour in the middle of the image) and gravel waves (undulated features, ranging in heights from 6 m up to 12 m and lengths of ̴100 m up to ̴210 m). Dark to light blue color scale indicates 1550 m to 1675 m water depth. See “New insights on gravity flow dynamics during submarine canyon flushing events” by Marta Ribó et al., p. 997–1002.
Image collected using the Kongsberg Maritime's HUGIN AUV, owned by University of Gothenburg. Data processed by NIWA and AUT staff.
