COVER: Campanian (late Cretaceous) sediments of the Judith River Formation are beautifully exposed along the banks of the Missouri River in the Upper Missouri River Breaks National Monument of north-central Montana, USA. These cliffs reveal alternating layers of floodplain and channel deposits that host a plethora of plant, mollusk, and vertebrate fossils. Studying these deposits furthers our understanding of nonmarine sequence stratigraphy and enables us to better interpret the fossil record using a robust sequence stratigraphic framework. See ‘Quantifying controls on the occurrence of nonmarine fossils’ by Regan et al., p. 1287–1290.
