COVER: Wind at Turrialba volcano in Costa Rica has sculpted unique erosional features within the summit crater. Volcanic gases (seen in background) emitted from the vent are carried by this same wind and absorbed by vegetation growing on and around the volcano. By examining the chemistry of individual tree rings, a record of the volcanic gas fluctuations, which are an excellent proxy for the level of volcanic activity, can be reconstructed through time.
