The optimum sample interval in any study of a deep-sea sedimentary core is a function of the sedimentation rate, the duration of the geologic event to be identified, and the number of points needed to satisfactorily resolve all maxima or minima of the event. For most geologic parameters, a sample spacing of at least 0.25 cycles per sample interval will be required in order to resolve every peak regardless of the biasing due to the placement of the initial sample. Now that it is possible to get estimates of the sedimentation rate in deep-sea sediments by various means, prior to detailed studies, it is recommended that a sampling density be chosen that will resolve every peak for the periods under study in any parameter used for between-core correlations.
