Abstract

Geochemically significant concentrations of particulate gold in the Westphalian coals of the South Wales coalfield are situated on the coal cleat and are associated with a complex sulfide assemblage. Gold grains up to 100 μm long and more than 20 μm thick display a colloform microtexture, suggesting an origin through late Variscan, low-temperature ground-water circulation. These discoveries provide additional constraints on the timing and rates of coal evolution.
