Abstract

A proposed correlation of major Archean shear zones across different metamorphic terranes of the central Superior province implies that the same shear zones are exposed at greenschist to granulite facies. Coalignment of the shear zones is recognized after systematic removal of regional Proterozoic dextral transcurrent and shortening deformation associated with the intracratonic Kapuskasing uplift. Subvertical in the upper crust, the structures become shallowly north dipping at deeper levels. The connection of these Archean shear zones provides limits on any sinistral transcurrent component associated with the tectonic evolution of the Kapuskasing uplift.
