Abstract

Drilling results and seismic reflection data from the East Mariana Basin are used to establish the presence of very thick sediments (≥1200 m) in the probable Jurassic basin, the dominance of redeposited material derived from the surrounding seamounts, and an anomalously great depth of crust (≥6900 m). Pelagic sediments dominate the interval 0–590 m, and volcanogenic and shallow-water carbonate turbidites occur in the middle interval (590–893 m). The lower ≥300 m of sediments are unsampled. The great depth to crust suggests that this region has had an unusual subsidence history or that present models are not adequate to explain the behavior of crust of this age.
