Intricately deformed, stratally disrupted, and mixed rocks produced at subduction zones have been considered structurally intractable. However, marine geophysical studies, deep-sea drilling, analyses of subaerially exposed complexes, and theoretical advances have recently produced breakthroughs in elucidating the structural enigmas of these accretionary complexes. The Penrose Conference “Structural Styles and Deformational Fabrics of Accretionary Complexes” assembled specialists from the above and related research areas and addressed the research frontiers of this dynamic topic. This conference in Eureka, California, in May 1984 drew participants from Great Britain, France, Canada, Japan and New Zealand.
