Erosion associated with deep thermohaline flow through the Amirante Passage, western Indian Ocean, has caused Upper Cretaceous sediments to become exposed at the sea floor. The age of a core of these sediments is the strongest direct evidence to date with which to support interpretations of the sea-floor–spreading history of the area based on geophysical data.
