Abstract
Examination of thin sections has shown that, on the basis of the internal structure, the coral from the Wenlock limestone (Silurian) in Shropshire, England, identified as Heliolites caespitosa, is identical with H. parvistella var. intricata. The name now becomes H. parvistella var. caespitosa. This variety, characterized by dendroid septation, seems to be found commonly in the center of the reefs, whereas H. parvistella, with laminar septation, occurs in the surrounding sediments. The two forms may therefore represent ecologic variants.
