Abstract

The genera Tasmanites (first described under the name Sporangites) and Leiosphaeridia have been considered as both spores and algae at various times. In comparison with Pachysphaera pelagica and Halosphaera minor, present-day species of green algae, it is concluded that Tasmanites is a fossil green alga, the forerunner of Pachysphaera, and that Leiosphaeridia may be similarly compared to Halosphaera. The fossil genera may therefore belong with the Chlorophyceae, but for the present are left in the Hystrichosphaeridae pending further study.
