Pelites in the aureoles of intrusions of basic magma in Connemara, Ireland, have been strongly metasomatized, dealkalized, and desilicated. Farther from the intrusions, the pelites show very little thermal metamorphism, but are similarly poor in silica and rich in alumina and total iron. Study of the chemical composition of pelites from southern Connemara and comparison with pelites on the north flank of the antiform, where the metamorphism is of a different facies, show little difference, and it is concluded that the compositions reflect original sedimentation features.
