Abstract

A goniatite fauna including Girtyoceras cf. weetsense has been found in shale overlying the Jew limestone (lower Carboniferous) near Greenhead, northeast of Carlisle, northwest England. The fauna and lithology are described, and correlation of the Jew limestone with the Hardraw and Oxford limestones to the east is considered valid. It is suggested that the P 1 -P 2 boundary be placed at the base of the Jew-Hardraw-Oxford limestones in the northern Pennines.
