Abstract

Reexamination of the holotype of Brancoceras (now Imitoceras) enniskillense and three other goniatites from the Carboniferous of Blacklion, Ireland, has brought to light a misinterpretation of a dorsal suture for a ventral suture. The holotype specimen is probably Beyrichoceras (Bollandites) excavatum, and two of the others are identified as B. (B.) castletonense. The fourth specimen is too poor for determination. The presence of the upper B 2 subzone in the Carboniferous limestone at Blacklion is thus definitely established.
