Abstract

In continuation of the discussion initiated by Eames it is pointed out that the type locality of the Aquitanian must be in the Aquitaine region (France), that European Tertiary stages are established on the study of shallow-water marine mollusks, and that the Aquitanian is therefore lower Miocene. The Oligocene-Miocene boundary in Trinidad is considered on the basis of various faunal zones. The conclusion is, pending other evidence, that the base of the Caribbean Miocene should be placed temporarily at the base of the Globorotalia fohsi zone.
