Abstract

Reexamination of the type material of Somaliaster, S. magniventer, from British Somaliland has shown that the plastron is meridosternous and that, rather than being assigned to the Hemiasteridae or Palaeopneustidae, Somaliaster should be assigned to the Meridosternata, in the Stenonasteridae, where it compares most closely with Iraniaster. The occurrence of S. magniventer in Cretaceous strata on the southwest flank of Kuh-i-Kossamas, Iran, is here recorded for the first time. The only other known locality is Italian Somaliland.
