Abstract

The Johnstone shell bed is an index zone in the Carboniferous Limestone Coal Group of Scotland. Directly above it, in north Ayrshire, southwestern Scotland, is a bed containing Lingula and Carbonicola. The Lingula specimens show evidence of having been transported. The Carbonicola specimens have been studied statistically. A new species, C. pervetusta, has been made and is described.
