Abstract

With reference to discussion of petrologic nomenclature by F. Walker and A. G. MacGregor, particularly as it applies to oligoclase basalts and mugearites, the point is made that mugearites bear the same relation to oligoclase basalt as a species to a genus. A plea is made for the use of rock names to indicate a specified chemical and mineral composition, with an additional descriptive phrase (rather than an uninformative name) to further indicate textural differences.
