Abstract

Unst, the most northerly of the Shetland islands, Scotland, was divided by H. H. Read into tectonic blocks of differing metamorphic histories. The tectonic history of the Muness phyllite block, in the southeastern part of the island, comprises the following stages: 1) sedimentation, 2) deformation, 3) intrusion of spessartite dikes, 4) resumed movement resulting in deformation of the spessartites, 5) jointing followed by movement producing joint-drags, 6) block faulting causing the present position of the block.
