The name hanleite is tentatively proposed for a magnesia-chrome garnet collected in 1864 near the Hanle monastery in Kashmir, India, and originally described by F. R. Mallet, who recognized it as distinct from uvarovite. On the basis of Mallet's description, which includes two analyses, the name is suggested although the specimens appear to have long since been lost, and the inaccessibility of the locality makes replacement unlikely.
