The stages in the metamorphism of Precambrian dolerites in the northwest Highlands of Scotland are outlined and compared with those of metadolerites in the southwest Highlands. It is shown that there can be large variation in the course of metamorphism in different localities, due to processes included inregional metamorphism. Therefore, no standard series of changes resulting from regional metamorphism can be set up. Three possible evolutionary lines for metadolerites are given.
