Abstract

Describes intraformational contorted shales which occur at several horizons in the upper Carboniferous of north Staffordshire, England, and in particular, a contorted bed has been folded and sheared, with deformation due to shearing stresses during folding. The terms "hussle" and "crozzle" are mining terms, the former designating contorted carbonaceous shale the latter a noncarbonaceous shale.
