The use of powder x-ray has long been a standard method for mineral identification and characterization. Over the last twenty years or so, the methods of diffraction profile fitting, established by Hugo Rietveld, and others, have extended the use of powder diffraction methods to crystal structure refinement, quantitative phase analysis and even ab initio crystal structure determination. While the current volume is primarily aimed at materials sciences, the methods are equally applicable to problems in mineralogy and petrology. The primary aim of the author was to provide a suitable undergraduate and graduate text for those interested in pursuing in-depth knowledge...
