The past decade has led to considerable advances in our understanding of the origin and behaviour of volatiles in magmas and the processes involved in magma degassing. New techniques to measure the composition and flux of volcanic gas emissions have been developed and a much improved understanding of their environmental impact has been gained through studies of active degassing volcanoes and past volcanic eruptions.
